Planning Your 2027 Study Abroad Intake: What Changed in the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany

If you are aiming at a 2027 intake in Australia, Germany, Canada or the UK, the planning window is already open. And for 2027 specifically, the rules in three of those four countries have changed in ways that affect what you get at the end.

Why 2027 planning starts now

The timeline is longer than most applicants expect:

  • University applications for September and January 2027 intakes typically open 9 to 12 months ahead
  • Visa processing varies by country, from a few weeks to several months
  • Language certification — IELTS, OET, or German A1 to B2 — needs structured preparation, not a few weeks of cramming
  • Scholarship and funding deadlines usually close before application deadlines

Start late and the usual outcome is not rejection. It is deferral to the next intake, which costs a year.

What changed for 2027, country by country

United Kingdom — the Graduate Route is shortening

This is the change that matters most if you are looking at 2027. The Graduate Route currently gives most graduates two years of post-study work permission. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, that drops to 18 months. PhD and doctoral graduates keep three years.

The cut-off is based on when you apply for the Graduate Route, not when your course starts or finishes. Anyone beginning a 2027 intake will be applying well after that date, so plan around 18 months rather than two years. UK degrees are still shorter than most, which partly offsets it — but budget and job-search plans should assume the new figure. UK study guide

Canada — the work permit now has conditions

The post-graduation work permit is no longer automatic on graduation. Current requirements:

  • Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates from universities need English at CLB 7 or French at NCLC 7 across all four skills. They are exempt from field-of-study restrictions.
  • College and other non-university programme graduates need CLB or NCLC 5, and must have studied in an eligible field linked to long-term labour shortages.

Language results must be less than two years old when you apply. The practical implication: if you are considering a college programme rather than a degree, confirm your specific field is on the eligible list before committing, because the list is reviewed and can change.

Australia — check the age limit first

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) Post-Higher Education Work stream gives bachelor’s and coursework master’s graduates up to two years, and research master’s and doctoral graduates up to three.

Two conditions catch people out. You generally need to be 35 or under when you apply, with research and PhD graduates eligible until under 50. And you need IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5, or equivalent, with test results valid for one year before lodgement rather than longer. If you will be over 35 by graduation, factor that in before you choose Australia for the work rights. Australia study guide

Germany — still cheap, but not uniformly free

Most German public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of roughly €150 to €400. Two exceptions matter:

  • Baden-Württemberg charges most non-EU students around €1,500 per semester — this covers Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Heidelberg and Freiburg
  • TU Munich introduced non-EU tuition for new bachelor’s and master’s students, ranging from about €2,000 to €6,000 per semester depending on the programme

Germany remains one of the most affordable destinations, but check the fee page for your specific programme rather than assuming. You will also need a blocked account, currently €11,904 for the year, from which you can withdraw about €992 a month. That amount has risen repeatedly, so verify it with the German mission handling your application before you transfer funds.

Germany also offers Ausbildung, a paid vocational training route that works differently from a university degree and suits some applicants better. Europe study guide

Choosing a destination

The right destination is not the one trending in search results. It depends on your academic background, your budget, your age at graduation and whether you are studying primarily for the qualification or for what comes after it.

A rough guide, given the current rules:

  • Australia — strong work rights and residency pathways, provided you meet the age and English thresholds
  • Germany — lowest cost if you pick the right state and programme, and strong graduate demand, but German language ability is the real gatekeeper
  • Canada — well-established study-to-residency route, now with genuine language and programme conditions attached
  • United Kingdom — shortest degrees and strong institutional reputation, with 18 months of post-study work from 2027

Four mistakes that cost an intake

  • Researching destinations without checking the rules that apply to you. General destination comparisons rarely mention age caps, language thresholds or field-of-study lists — and those are usually what decides your outcome.
  • Working from outdated information. Post-study work rules in all four countries have changed within the past two years. An article or forum post from 2024 can be confidently wrong.
  • Underestimating language preparation. IELTS, OET and German certification take structured preparation. German to B2 in particular is measured in months.
  • Handling visa documentation alone. One missing or incorrectly formatted document can push you to the next intake.

How 360Moves helps

Frequently asked questions

When should I start planning for a 2027 intake?

Now. Applications typically open 9 to 12 months before the intake, scholarship deadlines close earlier still, and language certification needs months of lead time.

Is the UK Graduate Route really being cut to 18 months?

Yes, for Graduate Route applications made on or after 1 January 2027. PhD and doctoral graduates keep three years. The date is based on when you apply for that visa, not your course dates.

Is studying in Germany still free?

At most public universities there is no tuition, only a semester contribution. Baden-Württemberg charges most non-EU students around €1,500 per semester, and TU Munich now charges non-EU tuition for new students. Check your specific programme.

Do I automatically get a work permit after studying in Canada?

No. University degree graduates need CLB 7 English or NCLC 7 French. College and other non-university graduates need CLB or NCLC 5 and must have studied in an eligible field.

Is there an age limit for post-study work in Australia?

Generally you must be 35 or under when you apply for the subclass 485 Post-Higher Education Work stream. Research and PhD graduates are eligible until under 50.

How much money do I need to show for a German student visa?

The blocked account requirement is currently €11,904 for the year, with withdrawals capped around €992 per month. It has been revised upward several times, so confirm the figure before transferring.

Do I need to be in the UAE to use 360Moves?

No. We work with applicants wherever they are, with teams across the UAE, UK, Germany and India.

Which destination is cheapest?

Germany, in most cases, if you choose a tuition-free state and programme. Living costs and the blocked account requirement still apply, so the total is not zero.

Visa and post-study work rules were checked against UKCISA, IRCC guidance, the Australian Department of Home Affairs and current German fee and blocked-account guidance in September 2026. These rules change frequently — confirm current requirements with the relevant authority before you apply or pay any fee.
