Academic, Not General
Every major nursing regulator requires IELTS Academic — IELTS General Training is not accepted for licensure anywhere, only for immigration.
No Band Below 7.0
NMC (UK) and AHPRA (Australia) both reject applications with even one component below 7.0 — a strong overall average cannot rescue one weak skill.

Exact Requirements by Destination
What your specific regulator actually checks
UK — NMC (Nurses)
Overall 7.0, with 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking. Writing has a long-standing concession allowing 6.5. Two sittings within 6 months can be combined if each scores at least 6.5 in every component.
UK — GMC (Doctors)
The strictest requirement of any regulator: 7.5 overall with 7.0 in every one of the four components, in a single sitting. Two sittings within 6 months can be combined, but each must hit 7.0 in every skill.
Australia — AHPRA (Nurses)
Overall 7.0 with no band below 7.0. Since April 2025, two sittings within 6 months are allowed (previously single-sitting only).
Australia — AMC (Doctors)
7.0 in each component, achieved in a single sitting — no exceptions, and no combining scores across test dates for medical registration.
Canada — NNAS / MCC
Nurses: overall 6.5 with 6.0 in each band (varies by province). Doctors: CLB 7 for immigration, though provincial colleges typically expect IELTS 7.0+ for full licensing.
Ireland (NMBI)
No band below 6.5 — more accessible than the UK or Australia while still requiring solid all-round English competency, for both doctors and nurses.
USA (CGFNS)
Nurses: overall 6.5 with Speaking specifically at 7.0, from a single sitting — combining two test results is not accepted for the VisaScreen Certificate.
IELTS or OET?
Both are accepted — the right choice depends on you
OET (Occupational English Test) is accepted as an equivalent by the NMC, AHPRA, and regulators in New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore and the UAE — neither test is preferred over the other by any major regulator. OET uses genuine healthcare scenarios (reading clinical guidelines, writing referral letters, listening to patient consultations), which many nurses find more natural than IELTS’s general academic topics. IELTS tends to be more widely available and often more affordable. We coach both, and help you decide which fits your background — the right test is whichever gets you registered fastest, not whichever is more popular.
