Australia PR — GSM Points Test Explained

General Skilled Migration (GSM) is Australia’s points-tested route to permanent residency for skilled professionals — no employer sponsorship required. We help UAE-based applicants build a genuinely competitive score, not just clear the 65-point minimum.

GSM Australia — the numbers that matter right now

Minimum to Enter the Pool

65 points on the points test — this is just the floor for lodging an Expression of Interest, not a guarantee of an invitation.

Realistic Competitive Score

Most Subclass 189 invitations in 2026 are landing around 85–95+ points — the 65-point minimum rarely leads to an invite on its own.

Three Visa Subclasses

189 (independent, no sponsorship), 190 (state-nominated, +5 points), and 491 (regional, +15 points with a path to PR after 3 years).

Three Visa Subclasses

Pick the route that fits your profile

Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent

No state or employer sponsorship needed. Your occupation must be on the MLTSSL, and the visa grants full, unconditional PR.

Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated

A state or territory nomination adds 5 points to your score, usually with a commitment to live in that state initially.

Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional

Adds 15 points via regional nomination or eligible family sponsorship. A provisional visa with a clear path to PR (Subclass 191) after 3 years.

How Your Points Score Is Built

Age and English ability carry the most weight

Your score is built from age (up to 30 points — 25 to 32 year-olds score highest), English ability (up to 20 for Superior English), skilled employment (up to 20), and qualifications (up to 20), plus bonus points for a state nomination, a skilled partner, or Australian study. A skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for your occupation is required before you can lodge an Expression of Interest.

How Australia's GSM Points Test Is Calculated

Seven factors, one shared test across 189/190/491

Age

The strongest single factor — maximum points sit in the 25–32 bracket, reducing steadily either side and cutting off at 45.

English Language Ability

Competent, Proficient or Superior English (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or OET for healthcare roles) — higher bands earn more points.

Skilled Employment Experience

Both overseas (including GCC/UAE experience) and Australian, with Australian experience weighted more heavily.

Educational Qualifications

Points scale with qualification level, from a relevant diploma up to a doctorate.

Study & Specialist Credentials

Bonus points for Australian study requirement or specialist education credential, if applicable.

State/Regional Nomination

Subclass 190 (state) or 491 (regional) nomination adds meaningful points — often what gets a borderline score over the line.

A relevant skills assessment is mandatory before points are calculated at all: Engineers Australia (EA) for engineers, ACS for IT professionals, VETASSESS for many other occupations, or the relevant health-profession assessing authority (e.g. ANMAC for nurses, after AHPRA registration).

Important distinction: AHPRA registration and GSM points-tested PR are two separate steps for nurses and doctors — AHPRA gives you the legal right to practise, GSM/ANMAC skills assessment gives you permanent residency. Most healthcare candidates need both, run as connected tracks.
