Work out your General Skilled Migration score in about a minute. Every factor comes from the Department of Home Affairs points table, with the bands that apply right now — then see what your number means against the scores health professionals are actually being invited at.

What the numbers mean before you start
The 65-Point Floor
65 points is the minimum to enter the pool. It lets you lodge an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect — it does not put you ahead of anyone.
What Health Professionals Needed
In the 4 June 2026 SkillSelect round, registered nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and occupational therapists were invited from 75 points. Several construction trades were invited at 65.
One Table, Three Visas
Subclasses 189, 190 and 491 share the same points table. The 190 adds 5 points for state nomination and the 491 adds 15.

Work out your GSM score
Every field maps to a band in the official points table. Most factors are assessed on the day you are invited rather than the day you lodge, so answer as at that date.
Your profile
Answer as you would on the day you expect to be invited — the Department assesses most factors at the time of invitation, not when you lodge your EOI.
Bonus points
These are the factors most people forget to claim — or claim when they should not.
An estimate only, based on the Department of Home Affairs points table current at September 2026. It is not a points assessment and not migration advice. Several factors turn on judgement calls — whether experience is closely related, how a qualification is assessed, whether a partner qualifies — which only a skills assessment and a registered migration agent can settle.
How It Adds Up
Age and English carry the most weight
Age is the single largest factor at 30 points and it peaks between 25 and 32. It falls to 25 at 33, to 15 at 40, and the points test closes entirely at 45 — which is why timing usually matters more than any other decision in a GSM plan.
English is the factor most people leave on the table. Competent English (IELTS 6 in each band) meets the visa requirement but scores nothing. Proficient English (7 in each) is worth 10 points and Superior English (8 in each) is worth 20 — a 20-point swing from a single test result.
Skilled employment is capped. Overseas experience maxes out at 15 points and Australian experience at 20, and the two together can never exceed 20. The work must be in your nominated or a closely related occupation, at least 20 hours a week, within the 10 years before your invitation.
Step-by-Step
What happens after you know your score
01
Skills Assessment
The assessing authority for your occupation — ANMAC for nurses, the AMC for doctors — confirms your qualification and experience match an approved occupation.
02
English Test
IELTS, PTE Academic or OET at the level your score depends on. This is usually the least expensive place to add points.
03
EOI in SkillSelect
You claim your points here. An Expression of Interest stays live for two years and can be updated whenever your score changes.
04
Nomination
For the 190 or 491, a state or territory nominates you against its own occupation list and criteria, adding 5 or 15 points.
05
Invitation & Visa
Invitations are ranked by score within each occupation. Once invited, you have 60 days to lodge the visa application.
Common Questions
Questions we get asked about the points test
Not sure your score will hold up?
The arithmetic is rarely the problem. What decides a case is whether your experience counts as closely related, how your qualification is assessed, and whether a partner qualifies. Send us your profile and we will check it properly before you commit to an EOI.
