NCLEX-RN in 2026 — the numbers that matter

Registration Fee

$200 USD paid to Pearson VUE for both the RN and PN exams — state board fees, background checks and prep materials are separate.

85 to 150 Questions

A 5-hour Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) — the exam adjusts difficulty in real time based on your answers, so question count alone never predicts your result.

Passing Standard Unchanged

The RN passing standard stays at 0.00 logits through March 31, 2029. The April 2026 update renamed some categories but didn’t change what you need to know.

Understanding the Format

CAT and Next Generation NCLEX, explained plainly

The NCLEX-RN uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) — correct answers trigger harder questions, incorrect answers trigger easier ones, so the exam converges on your true ability level rather than testing everyone identically. Since 2023, Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) question types — case studies, extended drag-and-drop, and clinical judgment scenarios — are fully embedded throughout the exam, with partial credit scoring on many items. The April 2026 test plan update kept all of this structurally identical; it mainly renamed a few content categories and refreshed terminology, so nothing about how you should study has fundamentally changed.

Where NCLEX Is Accepted

Our focus is Australia — here's the full picture

Australia

Australia formally adopted the NCLEX-RN in 2020, and AHPRA now runs genuine “Streamlined” and IQRN (Internationally Qualified Registered Nurse) pathways specifically for NCLEX-holders — a real, expedited route into Australian registration alongside the standard OBA process, not just general acceptance. NCLEX-qualified nurses moving toward Australia get structured support through this exact pathway, from eligibility check to AHPRA registration.

USA

Where NCLEX originated (1982) — the mandatory licensure exam in all 50 states plus Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Canada

Adopted NCLEX in 2015. Acceptance and pathway specifics vary by province — Ontario and British Columbia are generally the most accessible for internationally educated nurses.

UK, New Zealand, Ireland & Singapore

NCLEX is recognised as a valid English/competency component of registration, typically alongside other local requirements such as an OSCE or jurisprudence exam.

UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait & Bahrain

All accept NCLEX-RN as one route, but each still requires DataFlow verification and the country’s own licensing exam — DHA, DOH, SCFHS, QCHP or MOH depending on destination.
