AHPRA Nursing Registration — 5 Pathways Explained
There isn’t one single “AHPRA process” — there are five distinct pathways into Australian nursing registration, and which one applies to you depends on your country of qualification, graduation year, clinical hours and registration history. 360 Medicare — an AHPRA registration agency operating from Dubai and Kerala — runs a free eligibility check against all five before starting any application.

1. New Streamlined Pathway
UK, Ireland, USA, Canada (Ontario/BC), Singapore, Spain. No exams. ~2–4 months.
2. Streamline A
UK-registered nurses specifically. No OSCE required. ~2–4 months.
3. TTMRA via New Zealand
UK (and other) nurses willing to register in NZ first. No exam, via mutual recognition.
4. Malta Pathway
Malta-trained or Malta-registered nurses. No English test (IELTS/OET waived).
5. Standard OBA Pathway (Stream B)
Nurses who don’t fit any streamlined route. English test (if not exempt) + NCLEX-RN + OSCE. Up to ~12 months.
Pathway 1 — Fast-Track, No Exams
New Streamlined Pathway for Internationally Qualified Nurses (2025 Update)
Australia introduced a streamlined AHPRA registration process in 2025 for nurses from select NMBA-approved jurisdictions. If you’re a registered nurse from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada (Ontario or British Columbia), Singapore, or Spain, you may qualify to register without sitting the OSCE or NCLEX-RN. Requirements: a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing awarded 2017 onwards, and 1,800 hours of clinical practice in an NMBA-approved comparable country. Pathway 2 — UK-Registered Nurses
Streamline A: No OSCE Required
Streamline A is a UK-specific fast-track: a UK-registered nurse with relevant post-qualification experience can register without sitting the OSCE, even outside the general Streamlined Pathway’s graduation-year and clinical-hour criteria. In one recent case we managed, a UK-registered nurse with three years’ post-qualification experience, working in Dubai, was assessed as eligible for Streamline A — with her portfolio and references prepared and submitted, her AHPRA registration was issued without needing to sit the OSCE.
Pathway 3 — The TTMRA Shortcut
UK to Australia via New Zealand
Nurses from the UK (and several other jurisdictions) can take a smart detour via New Zealand. Under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (TTMRA), once you’re registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, transferring that registration to AHPRA is fast and straightforward. Steps: register with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, then apply to AHPRA under TTMRA. Pathway 4 — No IELTS, No OET
Malta Pathway: AHPRA Removes the English Requirement
If you completed your nursing studies in English in Malta, AHPRA now accepts that as proof of English proficiency — no separate IELTS or OET is required. What you need: valid Maltese registration and clinical practice documentation. Important extension: BSc-qualified nurses with at least one year of clinical experience in Malta don’t need to sit any English language test at all for AHPRA — the strongest version of this exemption, and one of the fastest documentation-only routes into AHPRA registration currently available. This makes a period of Malta registration a genuine accelerant for nurses targeting Australia, not just a destination in its own right.
Pathway 5 — For Everyone Else
Standard AHPRA Registration Pathway (OBA / Stream B)
Nurses from countries outside the streamlined list can still register through the standard pathway: qualification assessment, an English proficiency test (if not exempt), clinical experience submission, and the Outcome-Based Assessment (MCQ + OSCE). After AHPRA registration, most nurses apply for an ANMAC Skills Assessment and proceed with a Skilled Migration Visa (subclass 189/190/491). Need to sit the NCLEX-RN for your OBA assessment?
