Newfoundland & Labrador Nursing Registration (CRNNL) — A Faster Route Into Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador runs one of Canada’s most accessible nursing registration pathways for internationally educated nurses — including a Designated Countries fast-track that covers India. Most newly registered nurses here go on to work in other Canadian provinces too.
Recent update: On 15 April 2026, CRNNL merged with the Licensed Practical Nurses’ regulator to form the NL College of Nurses (NLCN) — one body now overseeing RNs, Nurse Practitioners, LPNs and Psychiatric Nurses. “CRNNL” is still the name most nurses search for, and the registration pathway itself is unchanged.

CRNNL / NL College of Nurses — the numbers that matter
India is a Designated Country
Nurses currently licensed in good standing in India qualify for the expedited Designated Countries Pathway — not the slower general route.
122% Growth in 5 Years
The number of internationally educated nurses registered in NL has more than doubled over the past five years — genuine, sustained demand.
A Gateway, Not a Dead End
The majority of newly registered IENs in NL go on to also register in another Canadian province — many use NL as their fastest way into the Canadian system.
Why Newfoundland & Labrador
One of Canada's most accessible nursing entry points
Newfoundland and Labrador has deliberately reduced barriers for internationally trained nurses, running a genuine Designated Countries Pathway for nurses already licensed in good standing in select countries — including India, the UK, the USA, Ireland, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. If you qualify, your registration moves noticeably faster than the general route. Just as importantly, NL registration isn’t a dead end: most newly registered internationally educated nurses in the province go on to register in other Canadian provinces too, using NL as a genuine stepping stone into the wider Canadian nursing system.
Two Registration Pathways
Which one applies to you
Designated Countries Pathway
For nurses currently licensed in good standing in India, the UK, USA, Ireland, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria or Hong Kong. Significantly faster processing — skips the standalone NNAS step required under the general pathway.
General Registration Pathway
For nurses not currently licensed in one of the designated countries. Starts with a National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) credential assessment before applying to the College.
The Registration Process
From eligibility to practising as an RN
01
Eligibility & Pathway Check
We confirm whether you qualify for the faster Designated Countries route or need the general NNAS-based pathway.
02
NNAS Assessment (if required)
Your nursing education and credentials are assessed against Canadian standards — only needed for the general pathway.
03
Application to the College
Your full application — licence history, education, identity and English proficiency documents — submitted to the College.
04
Bridging (if required)
If gaps are identified, the Centre for Nursing Studies’ IEN Bridging Program addresses them before registration proceeds.
05
Registration & Practice
Once approved, you’re registered to practise — and positioned to pursue registration in other provinces if you choose.
What You'll Need
A nursing education program recognised as equivalent to Canadian standards
A valid nursing licence, in good standing, from your home country or current jurisdiction
No disciplinary restrictions on your existing licence
Recent nursing practice within the last five years
