Full Test Cost
AUD 587 (roughly USD 385–455, INR 32,000–35,000) for all four sub-tests — same price on computer, paper, or OET@Home.
Grade B = 350+
Scored 0–500 per sub-test in 10-point increments, mapped to grades A–E. Grade B (350+) is the benchmark nearly every major regulator wants.

OET is owned by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment and built specifically around healthcare communication — reading clinical guidelines, writing referral letters and discharge summaries, listening to patient consultations, and speaking with patients or colleagues in realistic scenarios tailored to your specific profession. For many nurses and doctors, this makes OET feel more natural and relevant than a general academic test, since you’re working with vocabulary and situations you already know from clinical practice rather than topics like space exploration or economics.
Exact Requirements by Destination
What your specific regulator actually checks
UK — NMC & GMC
Grade B (350+) in all four sub-tests, accepted as an equivalent to IELTS 7.0. No component below Grade B is accepted.
Australia — AHPRA
From 23 April 2026, AHPRA moved to numeric OET score requirements rather than letter grades alone — 350+ per sub-test remains the practical benchmark.
Ireland, Canada & NZ
Grade B (350+) is the standard benchmark across NMBI (Ireland) and the nursing/medical councils of Canada and New Zealand — always confirm your specific board’s current policy.
USA — ECFMG
Stricter than most: 350+ on Listening, Reading and Speaking, but only 300+ on Writing — all in a single sitting. A shortfall on any one sub-test means retaking the full exam.
Attempts & Validity
Up to 12 attempts allowed in any 12-month rolling window. Scores are valid for 2 years with nearly every regulator.
Retaking a Single Sub-Test
If you’ve already sat the full OET once, you can resit just one weak sub-test (AUD 200.50) instead of the whole exam — except for ECFMG candidates, who must always retake all four.

Not Sure Whether to Take OET or IELTS?
Both are equally accepted by NMC, AHPRA and most other regulators — neither is preferred over the other. OET’s clinical scenarios often suit working nurses and doctors better, while IELTS is sometimes more widely available. Our Academy team can help you decide based on your target country and regulator.
